Hello, I Love You was really cute. Grace is running away from her family, and she decides to head to the complete opposite side of the planet to a school in Korea, where she meets a Korean musician who is brooding and…even rude at times. Grace has to navigate a country and culture completely different from her own as well as potential love.

When I first finished this book I was kind of…angry? Grace is not a nice person. She was ignorant, patronizing, judgmental, and just flat out rude to a lot of the people around her because they were different than her. Now that I’ve had time to think about it though, I realize that a lot of that was because of how she was raised – her family shaped her and influenced her thoughts on other cultures. While I do think she began to break out of that by the end of the novel, I don’t think it was quite as much as I wanted her to. But it was a start.

The romance was cute at times. I got a little annoyed by Jason (the love interest) as he continued to flip flop about his feelings and I wanted to reach in and shake him. Well, honestly, both Grace and Jason were hot and cold for each other throughout the novel. There were several times when I questioned WHY they even liked each other. However, this did kind of remind me of KDramas a LOT, which I know Katie is a big fan of, so I guess it makes sense.

I wouldn’t recommend this book to you if you think this a book about KPop or Korean culture because those themes are almost non-existent. Differences in American and Korean culture/customs/food/etc. were mentioned occasionally but not explored in depth like I was hoping. I was pretty disappointed with that. However, if you’re looking for a book that really resembles a KDrama (emphasis on the drama bit), Hello, I Love You is for YOU! The end of the book will give you all the feels.

It's okay. I was excited about the kpop aspect but it's just okay.
This book started off a little slow for me, and it took me about half of the book to get on board with the main character, Grace, but it eventually picked up, leaving me smiling at the end. It’s true what the reviews say, Grace can probably be classified as unsympathetic and a little on the lost side when it comes to being culturally aware, but in the best books, a character grows, and in HELLO, I LOVE YOU, Grace definitely grows as a person, making her likeable in my eyes.

Another aspect that kept me from giving this book a higher rating was the extremely slow buildup of the relationship between Grace and Jason. I liked the idea that their attraction and feelings for one another grew from a place of dislike, (some of my favorite romances are enemies-to-lovers stories!) but unfortunately, the hot-and-cold nature of their relationship lasted just a little bit too long for me in this story. I was ready for them to just get over themselves already and fall in love much sooner than it actually happened. That being said- once they do finally get over all of their issues, the romance is sweet and swoon worthy, with an absolutely adorable grand gesture at the end.

For me, this book became super interesting in the last third, when we get more information on the reasons why Grace ran away from home, and I felt so much more for her as her troubles came to light. It made the whole book worthwhile for me and solidified both the emotional arc and the romance for me.

With an irresistible foreign boarding school setting, deep emotional conflict, and a swoon-worthy romance, this book is an intriguing trip across the ocean. Readers will love the Korean setting and the fun backdrop of KPOP music. This book made me want to go back to high school and study abroad in the worst way!

After a slow start, this book redeemed itself, and I’d recommend sticking it out through a slow beginning for the swoon-worthy payoff at the end.
This book was recommended to me by a friend who knows how much I love kpop and kdramas and I am so glad she did! I fell in love with this book. Really made me want to go live in South Korea! Absolutely daebak
