Farewell My Denmark Tina Peterson Scott 9780989158107 Books

This book, Farewell, My Denmark, is a well written and researched take on the life of immigrants from Denmark and their voyage to America. Author Tina Peterson Scott has done a fantastic job of conveying her love of her Danish ancestors through her vivid portrayal of Catherine and her family.
I liked that Tina Peterson Scott still gave Catherine a bit of the teenage personality, though she is considered an adult at seventeen. In fact some may wonder why Catherine felt unable to talk to her own father and mother about the dangers she faced on the voyage, due to her accidental discovery of evil men on board, but I got it, because of the sometimes confused thinking of a teen.
This book kept me captivated from beginning to end and I can't wait to read the sister book, My Sweet Danish Rose. I highly recommend it to all who like a little history, adventure and romance. Good job Tina.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It offered an insight into Danish Mormon emigration. The characters were well portrayed. I felt annoyed over the parents' refusal to hear their daughter out and take her seriously, but unfortunately it was probably a typical attitude of the times. The opportunities for romance kept me guessing, but I was happy how it ended. Sweet.
Farewell, My Denmark kept me holding my breath. Catherine was faced with so many decisions about following the Spirit, her family, and her heart—and I could never guess how things would turn out. She and her family faced danger and heartache. Tina Scott’s well-researched story of the Saints who emigrated on The John J. Boyd kept me turning page after page, hoping that Catherine would land safely in America—and in the arms of true love. I can’t wait to read another one of Tina’s historical romances!
Farewell, My Denmark, by Tina Peterson Scott, is the story of a group of Danish converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who leave their beloved homes in Denmark to travel to America in 1863. What sets this story apart from other LDS Pioneer stories is that, instead of giving us another version of "crossing the plains" to the Utah Valley, it takes place entirely in Denmark and on the ship that brings these new converts to America.

Catherine, the young narrator, receives a conviction in her heart through prayer that immigrating to the United States is what the Lord desires her and her family to do. She sets out in faith, but discovers that faith and conviction do not guarantee an easy path to the goal. Her heart is full of love for her country of Denmark and for loved ones left behind. The journey aboard ship is challenging and sometimes heartbreaking. LDS readers are familiar with stories of mothers and fathers who buried children who died along the trail as they crossed the plains. But what would it have been like to lose a child while confined to a ship in the middle on an ocean? To see a loved one, not buried along the trail, but buried at sea? This book opened my eyes to challenges I had never before considered, faced by Pioneers immigrating from Europe in the 19th Century.

This book is extremely well researched, as attested by the research notes in the back of the book. One feels the author's love for her Danish ancestors throughout the story. If you are interested in reading a different take on the LDS Pioneer experience, I highly recommend Farewell, My Denmark.
Good story based on facts. The so called Mormon Creed sometimes gets inthe way of common sense. Why could she not confide in her own Father? Maybe it would not have been good suspense.
It opens your eyes to know how our families felt coming to the United States in the 1800's.Life couldn't have very easy for them.
This is a tender yet informative story. I can't wait until her next book!
The story kept my interest. Characters were well developed and the author had obviously done research on historical period. It was a quick read.
