I grew up in a part of the country where images of and references to the adventures of John Jorrocks were not uncommon, but I didn't actually get around to reading the stories until very recently. Curiously, I had been so routinely exposed to Jorrocks prints and references that I was somewhat surprised to learn he was a fictional character. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in hunting or country sports.Product details

nice period piece
I wanted to read this for so long, but couldn't find a hard copy. Language is hard to follow as it is a bit dated. Fox hunting literature is hard to find. Still and entertaining classic.
I read this as on and enjoyed it immensely. Having previous experience of Surtees sporting works through "Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour", I was pleased to find Surtee's hero Jorrocks in fine fettle. He takes us on a sporting tour of 19th century life by means of foxhunting, stsg hunting , shooting, horse racing (in Paris), trips to Margate and Herne Bay. There are vivid descriptions of the enormous meals enjoyed and the good wine and ales. He must have had an iron constitution (and liver) to survive
There are fascinating insights into life in Dickensian London which complement the latter author perfectly.
I found this hard to get into. Most of the wordage and references are from a different time. It's like trying to understand Kiplings Stalky and Co. stories, you had to have been there from that time to know what they are talking about.
