This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The Mystery of Golf Arnold Haultain Books

I picked up this book because I’m working on a project related to golf and was told it’s a classic. I had no idea what to expect from a golf book written in 1910!

More than a book about the secrets of golf, this is a history book. Read it and you get a glimpse into what golf (and sports in general) was like at the beginning of the last century. It was a gentleman’s sport that came close to being a religious experience. The difference in our understanding of sports today from then is so wide that Haultain’s meditation (and that’s what this book is) could have been written in the Renaissance!

While many sections are dated, there are observations, conjectures, and musings that are prescient of our contemporary understanding of golf. This is especially true with his musings on visualization (which he calls “imagination”).

I was charmed and even moved by this book. Haultain’s reverence for the sport is moving. His code of ethics as a man is admirable. His philosophical musings are alternatingly impressive and quaint. Very quaint, as when he writes:

“In Life, were a man to say to himself just this, ‘I will be in earnest,’ – even about the most trivial of things, it seems to me he would get on. Even if he were not very intelligent, he would be trustworthy. And in Golf, if a man were to say to himself just this, ‘I will look at my ball,’ he too would get on. You must address the ball in the Imperative Mood, not in the Subjunctive or Interrogative. . .”

Does he unravel the “mystery” of golf? No. Yet, his book helped me in my research in that it gave me insight into the historical roots of golf’s mystique. I may not get “it” but I have a deeper respect for the phenomenon that is golf.

So, do I recommend this book? Hmm. . .only if you are genuinely interested in learning more about the history of this institution.

The Mystery of Golf Arnold Haultain Books Reviews

All the mysteries of golf are probed physiological, physical, spirituality and the author does not forget to tell you to keep your head down and your eye on the the ball until the swing is completed. Words can only partly explain golf (the full experience of the mystery, of course can only be gained from actually playing) and this little book does that part extremely well.
Interesting take on golf from 1924. Sometimes a dictionary is handy. I would say more of a mental approach to the game.
The book arrived on time and in the condition stated. I would recommend the seller.
a classic that understands the complexity of the game and expresses it in wonderful British English.
i took a chance buying this ebook, but my the gamble was rewarded with quite an exposition on what Golf can do to a human being. It has been thoroughly entertaining, the purpose of most bedside readers. It also has brought together how & what a game can do to influence thought and action beyond the links.
It just really underlines why i and so many love the game. A good read, though some of the english is 30's archaic; have to do a double-take on some of the phrases used and their meaning or writers intent. Adds to the spiciness though!
Enjoyable regardless of the age of the content
This is a MUST read for any golfer that truly loves the game, their friends, and life!

I can't wait to share it with my sons, my fellow members of Oakmont CC, my past team members and coaches at Bucknell, and all of my friends throughout the world!!

Yours in golf,

Chick Wagner
