"The books the world calls immoral, are the books that show the world its own shame." - Oscar Wilde

"Street Child is not for the faint of heart" - THE SEATTLE TIMES

Street Child is the shock-inspiring story of a young boy who escapes his increasingly dysfunctional and violent middle class home. Remanded into state custody at ten years old, he embarks on a journey through the foster care system only finding safety from unlikely skid-row heroes on downtown streets of Seattle and San Francisco - where children are victims and victims are considered criminals.

While dodging serial killers and predators, including a juvenile court judge who oversees his custody, these children develop familial bonds while protecting each other in an increasingly dangerous - yet invisible world. By telling these authentic stories with often times devastating outcomes, he articulates the stark reality of life on the streets for countless young people.

Many of the children in Street Child were featured in the movie STREETWISE which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Street Child is a powerful and intimate depiction into these homeless children’s actual lives during their most desperate times of survival. Their sweet camaraderie, funny antics, and intimate relationships will move your heart and soul into a new understanding and personalization of their noble plight.

Author Justin Reed Early cultivates hope while bringing new life to his childhood friends. The children portrayed are real and these stories are authentic.

Street Child is a journey no child should ever have to endure.

STREET CHILD A Memoir eBook Justin Reed Early

A couple years ago I watched Streetwise, so I knew about Justin Early and the other unfortunate runaways. I LOVED this book, and it was hard to put down. Unfortunately, I had to give it four stars as the book had serious editing flaws. A book's editing makes or breaks it, and the numorous grammar errors, misspellings, and other typos definitely hindered the flow. If you're going to publish a book, you better make damn sure you have a decent editor. Nonetheless, it was a great read.

Mr. Early' sad story is a account of a child who was victimized, exploited, left to fend for himself, and had to survive as a runaway at ten years old. How he was able to face his traumas, addictions, an AIDS diagnosis, and come to grips with his sexuality is a testament of his strength through extreme adversity. Mr. Early encountered others who were hanging by a thread but helped him survive on the streets, with many succumbing to them. The saddest part of Early's story wasn't part of his narrative but of his friend Roberta's, was murdered by the Green River Killer. It's amazing he isn't dead himself.

I grew up with a mother who was on the streets at 14, and Early's story is pretty similar to hers. Even with that upbringing it was extremely hard to read, as no child at ten should have to turn tricks to survive or have to run away.

STREET CHILD A Memoir eBook Justin Reed Early Reviews

Thank You Justin for writing this book and sharing your story. I am a grandmother and never knew some of the things that goes on in this world right next door to us. This is a book that every parent should read and learn from it. You Justin are a remarkable person and an excellent author. Just always hold on to Jesus our Lord He is always there for us. For you to share your life with so many people which you are still doing through this book is so awesome. When I started reading the first page I could not put it down until the end it touched every emotion in me, I have never read a story that touched me as much as this one did. May God bless you always.
This book kept me up all night reading . I highly recommend this book.
The Author tells his story of a life that left him few choices. His strong will and life determination, showed him how to survive. Being so young, living on the streets could not have been easy.
He overcame, survived and threw his heart into this book.
It's a wonderful true story , that tugs at your heart and is not to be missed.
I had to put this book on pause for a couple hours so i could watch the documentary.Seeing the faces on a screen vs imagining what the actually looked like from his account was wonderful. I watched it ,and started the book over. I knew exactly how they all looked. The story was set. I looked up these people ss well as facestalked them . I enjoyed every minute of it all!
This is a story of a young man who didn't have the best childhood, he may of failed a few times , but in the end his perseverance and strength won out . May God watch over this wonderful man.
I've worked with these youth, including Justin, for 40 plus years. It is accurate and well written. And a powerful story.

If you find this book interesting, you might also want to watch the Academy Award nominated documentary called STREETWISE (Justin Early) is in it.
This is a harrowing tale of survival against all odds. To be unloved by a parent and to end up on the streets at such a tender age makes for absorbing reading. That the writer could overcome these odds against him, over and over again says much for the human spirit. Not a pretty story by any means but one that showed me another side of life and how often the most distressed people are the ones who can empathise with others.Well done Mr. Early.
I was actually looking for a different book when this one caught my eye. I love memoirs, so I took a chance. Justin is someone you will never forget once he takes up residence in your heart. His childhood years on the street are heartbreaking and filled with moments that NO child should ever experience. To be honest, his life even before he was on the streets was wrong for any child. Driven out by a mentally unstable and abusive father, Justin chose the streets over the system which failed him in every way conceivable.

Adults disappoint children all the time, even parents. But there's still this innate belief in children that some adults are compelled to be heroes... preachers, judges, police officers, yet those who prey on children wear the disguises that lure the children in with false hope and when these 'heroes' reveal themselves, it shatters the last bit of trust that children have.

Justin is lucky to be alive. As a small child, he survived events on the streets that would have brought a grown man to his knees. What struck me the most about Justin is that even when he was filled with rage and striking out at anyone and everyone, there was still this kind heart in Justin who fell in love with someone he couldn't have, who watched out for his friends, who befriended those that most of us would cross the street to avoid, and who kept trying over and over again with the parents who didn't deserve his time. Justin survived hell with his heart still intact and that's the most amazing thing of all.

Buy this book. Buy many copies and send them to social service agencies or teachers or churches. There are so many Justins and Robertas still out there and they're invisible to everyone except those who seek to exploit them. My only note with this book is that it does contain errors that could have been caught by a good editor. Editing is what I do professionally, so maybe I just see those things more than others, but that's my issue. The story itself was Justin's voice and told perfectly.

My only question to Justin is this For those of us who read your story and decide to take action by being a foster home that a child can be safe in, how do we push past the defenses of the children we take in? How do we make them think twice about returning to the streets? There are a lot of dismal foster homes out there, but for those of us who actually want to help, what would you tell us?

Thank you, Justin, for a story that will stay with me forever. I hope you find someone to love you as much as you loved Frankie. If anyone deserves unconditional love, it's you.
